My mom has one and I don't know what it is either. I imagined putting rings and other jewelry in it though. Love your brooches!
.... I hate to say this, but the few other people I know that use them use them as ash trays. ... HOWever, I've also seen them used for sewing as well. Full of pins and whatnot. But, like said, it's what YOU make it to be. And it looks pretty just as is. :)
